Stable Seas Contributes to the Women in Maritime Security Workshop

Women Participation in Blue Economy

Dr Ifesinachi Okafor-Yarwood, a research consultant with Stable Seas, was invited to contribute to a two-day workshop hosted by the Institute of Security Studies (ISS), titled, "Defining women's participation in the maritime sector from security to development." The discussion centred around understanding the reasons for the gaps in women representation within the maritime sector, the important role women already play in the blue economy, in particular, the fisheries sector and how they can be better supported. The workshop will result in a policy paper that will guide action on better engagement with, and participation of women in the maritime security sector. Dr Okafor-Yarwood contributed to the discussion by sharing her experience of women participation in the maritime sector in West and Central Africa.
